Abak community: A place to worry about?

Abak local government is one of the five local governments in Akwa Ibom State. It is located in the east of the state and shares its boundaries with Uyo, Etinan, Ogoja, and Ikot Ekpene local governments. The population of Abak Local Government Area according to the 2006 Census was 139,090 people. It has a landmass of 1,907 square kilometers.

The population in Abak has grown rapidly over the years due to migration from other parts of Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria as a whole. This has led to increased demand for electricity which has not been met, leading to a poor power supply.




Security 



The security situation in Abak local government in Akwa Ibom is still a major concern. The area is notorious for armed robbery and kidnapping.

In the last few months, armed bandits have been attacking villages, killing and maiming people, and stealing and destroying property at night, and This is not a new phenomenon in the area.

The Abak Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State is one of the least developed areas in the state. The road and drainage situation in this local government area is a major challenge to its development. In the past few years, there has been a lot of construction in the Abak local government. This has led to a lot of drainage and road-related problems. Roads are constructed with no proper planning, leading to flooding and other drainage problems during the rainy season. The roads are also poorly maintained, leading to potholes or pot-holes that can cause accidents.

The situation of the schools in Abak local government is not as good as it should be. The schools are not well equipped, They lack basic facilities like lights and desks for the students to use and there is a shortage of teachers.

The healthcare situation in Abak local government in Akwa Ibom state is not very good. The health facilities are not well equipped and there are not enough health workers. The government has done a lot to improve the situation but it is still not enough.

The challenges that confront healthcare in Abak local government include:

  • Lack of adequate health facilities with trained personnel to deliver quality healthcare services;
  • Unavailability of sufficient drugs for treatment;
  • Lack of adequate health education to promote healthy living among the population; and 
  • Poor funding for healthcare.

The people of the Abak local government area in Akwa Ibom state are faced with several challenges. One of these challenges is the poor living conditions that they are forced to live in.


This is especially so for the women who have to go through a lot just to get their children to school, find food and provide shelter for the family. They have no access to clean water electricity and other basic amenities needed for a decent life.
